The Top N feature helps you quickly identify the most valuable or relevant profiles in an audience based on criteria like:
- Average monthly spending
- Average basket size
- Age
- Frequency of engagement
It allows you to sort in ascending or descending order, save the resulting segment, or export it to a CSV for further use. This makes targeting, personalization, and analysis faster and easier.
To get started, navigate to Customer Hub> Segmentation > Top N.
Step 1: Configure Your New Segment
- Begin by giving your segment a clear and descriptive name that reflects its purpose, such as Top 100 Frequent Customers.
This will make it easy to identify later, especially if you plan to create multiple Top N segments.
- Next, select the source segment you want to analyze.
This could be an existing segment or your full audience. Make sure the source segment is up-to-date so that your Top N results accurately reflect the most important profiles. Your choice here sets the foundation for sorting and defining the size of your final segment.
Step 2: Configure Sorting Rules
In this step, you define the criteria that determine which profiles will appear in your Top N segment.
You can add one or more rules depending on what you want to achieve. For example, you might use:
- sum_invoice_6m to focus on total spending over the last six months,
- number_of_transactions_12m to target the most active customers,
- avg_monthly_spent_12m for consistent monthly spenders, or tenure to prioritize long-term users.
For each rule, you can choose whether to sort in ascending or descending order, depending on your goal.
For instance, if you want the highest-spending customers, you would select descending for sum_invoice_6m. By combining multiple rules, you can create a more nuanced segment that reflects multiple aspects of user value or engagement.
After configuring your sorting rules, you’ll specify how many profiles should be included in your new Top N segment. Simply enter the number of profiles you want in the “New segment will have _ Profiles” section —whether it’s the Top 50, Top 100, or any other number.
This setting finalizes the segment size and determines exactly how many of the most relevant profiles, based on your selected rules, will be part of the output.
For example, if you select tenure in descending order and avg_invoice_6m also in descending order, and set the segment size to 100, the system will generate a segment containing the 100 profiles with the longest tenure and the highest average spending over the past six months.
Once you’re happy with the result, click Create segment to save it. The new Top N segment will appear in the Segmentation tab together with your existing segments.
